Many people have experienced things which cannot be explained. They may feel the cause is ghosts....perhaps it is. What is a ghost? No one really knows. All we do know is that things happen without a plausible explanation.

I work from a neutral or "agnostic" standpoint with no prejudices in terms of belief or disbelief in these reported events and when I do investigate, it is from a strictly "nuts-and-bolts" view to what's been experienced and why.

This blog is a portal for those who want to share, talk or learn about their experiences with the unknown. Your anonymity is sacred and no judgment will be passed on you. By talking about your experiences you may find it helps. Educating yourself is a great way to lessen your fear....or pursue your interest.

If you have an experience you would like to report click on the Ghosts and Hauntings Reporting form found on the top right of the sidebar.

Of Ghost Hunters & Ghostbusters

On my usual morning news surfing foray, where I catch up on the freak show that is called the world, I came upon this little nugget of loveliness….

I don’t have as much of an issue with the wordy bit of the story, more with the picture, showing the mother daughter team taking “readings” at the grave of a supposed local witch. First thing springing to mind is, have they sought out the family of this most likely wrongly accused woman? Would they appreciate people fiddling around their descendents grave and perpetuating the epithet witch? I’m willing to bet the word witch, in this case, is meant to be derogatory and not Wiccan in nature. It’s a wee bit disrespectful in my book to take these kind of liberties.

Reading the comments section you get a pretty clear cross-section of the view people have of those interested in ghostly phenomenon. People like the ones highlighted in the story become the poster children for our pursuit….even though they aren’t in our pursuit! Cemeteries are some of the least purportedly haunted locations you can go to, so if you’re on the prowl for spooks this would be a poor choice….a nice picnic site, yes, but rest assured your picnic is likely very safe from the incursions of the angst ridden dead.

To their credit they state they are not in this to hunt ghosts….and thank god! cause whenever I hear the term “ghost hunters” it conjures up images of Elmer Fudd hunting for wabbits, a comparison that comes from Saturday morning cartoons and is about as serious. Ghostbusters is the term they use…or at least CBC thought it fit nicely to describe what these two do. It’s a rather aggressive term that instantly reminds us of Hollywood. Perhaps they’re trying to ride the coattails of the movie, and thus be seen as intense scientific minded people who are there to save the world from a threat that doesn’t exist. I don’t know, but then I find it very hard to understand anything that goes through the minds of people trying to sensationalize themselves using ghosts as a tool.

Of course anyone taking ghost research and investigation seriously now has a very hard time when the inevitable question comes up in polite conversation…”so, what do you do in your spare time?” Once you mention your hobby most people immediately pull up from their brain databanks stories and articles like this, and cross reference these images with you. It’s like Shakespearian actors being lumped in with the cast of Jersey Shore!

Although, I should really calm myself about this because as Shakespeare said…”Heat not a furnace for your foe so hot that it do singe yourself.”

  1. I prefer the old SPR term of psychical researcher or documentarian when labeling my interests. Thanks to "realityish tv" and paranormalgroups that try to reenact them, the name "ghost hunter" conjures up visions of Scooby Doo for adults in the minds of the general public and that is definitely not what we do or I personally wish to be thought of.

  2. That is a much better term Sue. Now, the trick is getting the word out there and its meaning at the risk of the ghostbusters and ghost hunters taking it on....although I'm sure some already have.

  3. Love the Fud cartoon ,I just fell across your blog while reading the topics posted on the board. It is good to see you are sharing your thoughts, experience, and views. I look forward to reading more when I have some more free time.
